CABUYAO, LAGUNA – Toshiba Corporation and the Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) consortium turned over 100 laptops with Internet access to 10 public high schools in Laguna. The turnover ceremony was held at Gulod National High School in Cabuyao town on March 25, 2010.

GILAS has been connecting Philippine public high schools to the Internet since 2005, with 2,619 schools connected as of March 15, 2010. Organized as a multi-sectoral consortium, GILAS brings together various corporations, local governments, legislators, schools, local communities and overseas Filipinos to support its cause. The Ayala Foundation, Inc. acts as the secretariat and project manager of GILAS.

Toshiba’s involvement in GILAS comes from its corporate philosophy that emphasizes respect for people, creation of new value and contribution to society. Toshiba is determined to help create a higher quality of life for all people, and to do its part in helping ensure that progress continues within the world community by bringing the benefits of information technology to the youth.

The event celebrates the third year of Toshiba’s commitment to support GILAS’ mission of promoting information literacy among the nation’s youth by providing 10 laptop computer units and Internet connectivity to each of the 10 selected beneficiary schools. This brings to 30, the number of public high schools that received 10 laptops each over the last three years.
